Post-16 Projects 2020/21
Supporting Core Maths
Lead: Mark Huyton
The success of Core Maths relies on the pool of enthusiastic teachers that provide students with the necessary expertise and experience. This Work Group aspires to connect those teachers to strengthen that pool. Participants will come together to explore the philosophy of Core Maths and develop improved teaching techniques that address the contextualised problem-solving nature of the course. This project, run collaboratively with the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), will contribute to the wider national effort to grow that pool, and embed Core Maths confidence and culture within schools and colleges. This project is for all current and potential teachers of Core Maths. These may be teachers in post-16 settings whose main subject is maths or whose main subject is not maths, and who may be unable to access local TSST provision for Core Maths.
Developing Pedagogy in A Level Maths
Lead: Emma Watts
Run in partnership with the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), this project aims to develop existing A Level pedagogy and support development of the requirements of the linear A Levels and understand the purpose of the overarching themes in departments. Participants will gain confidence in leadership and developing others within their department. There will be a focus on the psychology of memory recall and on building resilience of A Level mathematicians. This Work Group is for people leading development of maths teaching and learning in departments with A Level provision and other experienced A Level teachers. For example, heads of department, KS5 coordinators, programme managers or course leaders, or other experienced teachers with a similar role. This project is not a subject knowledge development programme for teachers new to A Level.
Supporting Post-16 GCSE Resit
Lead: Laura Hall
There are two broad aims to this project. First, to explore effective ways of teaching key content to GCSE resit students. Second, to explore effective ways of working with teachers of post-16 GCSE resit. Participants will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum demands of GCSE maths and their awareness of pedagogical approaches that best support students taking GCSE for the second time. This Work Group is for teachers of post-16 GCSE maths resit and/or any head of department where this is taught. Participants may be based in FE colleges, sixth form colleges, schools with post-16 provision or other post-16 settings.
